Sumud Dead Sea Salt is a natural Palestinian food salt harvested from the shores of the Dead Sea near Jericho. It is produced by the West Bank Salt Company, the only Palestinian salt producer operating directly on the Dead Sea, a family business founded in 1964 that has kept producing despite decades of restrictions under occupation. Mineral-rich Dead Sea water, nearly ten times saltier than the ocean, is left to evaporate in ponds until crystals form. The salt is then washed and milled into medium grains, with no refining or anti-caking additives. It adds distinctive flavour to your food while supporting a Palestinian producer determined to remain on its land.

Alle unsere Produkte werden in Palästina hergestellt und an unser Logistikzentrum in Portugal geliefert. Von dort aus wird jede Bestellung per eingeschriebener Post mit Sendungsverfolgung versendet. Die Zustellung im Zielland erfolgt durch den örtlichen Postdienst.

Die Geschichte

From the Lowest Shore on Earth

More than 400 metres below sea level, on the Dead Sea’s northern shore, a narrow road leads to a small Palestinian salt factory. Though its ageing machinery gives little away, this refinery has been producing salt since 1964.

That year, a Palestinian family took over a Jordanian-British potash factory under an agreement with the Jordanian government, turning it into the West Bank Salt Company, which supplied table salt across the West Bank, Gaza and Jordan.

Dead Sea water is still pumped into twelve evaporation ponds across 600 dunums, where the desert sun leaves salt crystals over eight months, ready to be harvested, washed and milled.

Three years later, Israel’s occupation of the West Bank placed the factory in a closed military zone, later Area C. Restrictions on construction, infrastructure and access made operating difficult; electricity only arrived in 2010.

Yet the business endured, and remains the only Palestinian salt producer on the Dead Sea.

Sumud Stories is partnering with the factory to bring its salt to a wider audience, supporting jobs and the Palestinian economy. That is Sumud, or steadfastness: backing Palestinian businesses that keep producing on their own land.
