This ceramic fridge magnet imagines Handala finally coming home. Created by Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali, Handala is a ten-year-old refugee boy who will not grow older until he can return to Palestine. For decades he has stood with his back to us, facing his homeland. Here, a Sumud Stories artisan places him at the gates of Jerusalem: an image of return, and of a dream carried by generations of Palestinians. Hand-painted in Al-Khalil, Palestine.

Die Geschichte

Who is Handala?

Handala was created in 1969 by Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali. He is ten years old, the age al-Ali was when his family was forced from the village of al-Shajara during the Nakba of 1948. Handala, he said, would stay ten until he could return home. By 1973, Handala had turned his back to the viewer and clasped his hands behind him, becoming the figure recognised around the world today.

Handala grew from al-Ali's own exile. Al-Ali grew up in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon, and writer Ghassan Kanafani first published his drawings in 1962. Over the decades that followed, al-Ali drew thousands of cartoons about Palestine, exile, injustice and the lives of ordinary people.

Barefoot, simply dressed and always facing Palestine, Handala came to represent the refugee who never forgets where he came from. Al-Ali called him his compass. The child who refuses to grow older carries an unfinished promise: one day he will turn around, show us his face and begin to grow again.

Al-Ali was assassinated in London in 1987, and no one has been convicted of his murder.

This magnet imagines the wait's end: Handala at Jerusalem's gates, finally home. A dream carried across generations.
