Die Geschichte

The largest ancient unified work of mosaic in the world

Within Hisham’s Palace, an early Islamic royal complex from the 8th century, lies a monumental mosaic floor unlike any other. Covering approximately 827 square metres and composed of more than five million stones, it forms a vast carpet of interlocking geometric patterns across the palace’s main halls and bath complex.

While larger mosaics exist elsewhere, many were created over centuries, across different buildings, and in varying styles. What sets the mosaic at Hisham’s Palace apart is its unity. It was conceived and laid as a single composition, completed within one historical period during the Umayyad era. For this reason, it is considered the largest ancient mosaic carpet ever created as one unified work.

The palace itself was damaged by an earthquake in 749 and gradually buried by sand. When Palestinian archaeologist Dimitri Baramki rediscovered it in the 1930s, the mosaic emerged almost intact after more than a thousand years underground.

The Sumud Mosaic Pendant draws from this central carpet, translating architectural art into wearable form. Cast in NuGold brass, it reflects the endurance, care, and quiet beauty of Palestine’s deep cultural heritage — a reminder of a land whose art and history long predate the present moment.
