A limited edition product from Sumud Stories. Soapalestine is a handcrafted soap for the hands and face, made by women artisans in Palestine using local olive oil and black seeds. Shaped like a slice of watermelon and coloured in the shades of the Palestinian flag, each piece carries the story of resilience and the creativity of Palestinian artists who once relied on the watermelon as a discreet symbol of identity. Produced in small batches at home workshops, this soap supports and empowers the women who craft it, making it both a meaningful homage to Palestinian heritage and a nourishing treat for everyday use.

The story

A Symbol of Resistance, Freshly Soaped

The soapalestine soap began as a simple idea that gradually grew into a symbol of cultural meaning. Before the watermelon became globally recognised as an emblem of Palestinian identity, the project aimed to highlight its story and its use in Palestinian art and daily life. For years, artists relied on the watermelon’s colours as a discreet form of resistance when displaying the Palestinian flag could lead to punishment. Its red, green, white, and black quietly upheld a sense of presence, memory, and belonging.

As the watermelon symbol gained international visibility, it demonstrated how culture can transcend borders. Yet the purpose behind soapalestine has remained unchanged: to honour a piece of Palestinian heritage and support the women who preserve these crafts and small home-based productions. Each soap is handmade in Palestine using Palestinian extra virgin olive oil and black seeds. The bars are created through careful layering, with black seeds added to the red section to evoke watermelon seeds. In Palestinian and many other traditions, black seeds are believed to cure all illnesses except death, giving each bar a spiritual dimension.

Offered as a limited edition, soapalestine celebrates the watermelon’s symbolism while directly supporting its artisans. Each bar expresses creativity, identity, and the steadfast resilience of Palestinian life.
