The story

NuGold Brass Production in Palestine

Since the Late Bronze Age, metalworkers smelted copper-rich ores at high temperatures to extract usable copper. What they didn’t know was that some of these ores, especially those from Jericho and the Timna Valley, naturally contained traces of zinc. Although zinc melts and evaporates at lower temperatures than copper and most of it would vanish during smelting, the imperfect heat of ancient furnaces allowed just enough zinc to remain and fuse with the copper. The result was a bright, golden-toned alloy later known as NuGold brass, an accidental discovery whose gold-like glow made it especially prized for jewelry.

Over time, metalworkers in Palestine and across the Islamic world refined their techniques. By the Islamic Golden Age, they had mastered the art of alloying copper with zinc to create NuGold brass. This golden-toned metal became the foundation for engraved astrolabes, intricate jewelry, oil lamps, and ceremonial trays that decorated homes and mosques in Jerusalem, Jaffa, and Gaza. Though the craft has become rare, it has not disappeared.

These brass Palestine map pendants bear witness to a craft passed down through generations. They stand as tangible proof of a legacy kept alive through the deep connection between the land of Palestine and its true natives.
