Sumud Stories™ Fair Trade works with talented Palestinian artisans to rescue and revive their craftsmanship at risk of fading. Together, we explore their stories and learned traditions to create new items for a global audience, always rooted in the deep heritage of Palestinian artisanship.
Sumud: More than Steadfastness
The Arabic word “sumud” means steadfastness, but for Palestinians, it goes much deeper. Sumud is the quiet strength to endure daily challenges, living under occupation, lacking sovereignty and governmental support, and remaining at the mercy of those who control our borders whenever we need to move even the simplest goods. Despite constant humiliation and mistreatment, we continue to preserve our stories and create beauty. Every creation in our collection is a small act of sumud, a testament to the resilience of our culture and the hope that dignity and creativity can endure even in the hardest conditions.
Rescuing Traditions, Creating Futures
In recent years, many of Palestine’s oldest crafts, such as leatherwork, silver jewelry, wood carving, and music-making, have become endangered. Factories are closing, masters are growing old, and young people often struggle to find reasons to stay connected to these traditions. With Sumud Stories™, we want to change that. Our mission is simple: to work hand in hand with the last remaining artisans, inspire new designs, and make sure these crafts provide not just a living wage but a living future.
More Than Fair Trade
Sumud Stories™ follows international Fair Trade principles, working with a wide range of artisans, paying fairly, protecting the health of the artisans and the environment, and reaching out to support remote communities across Palestine. But for us, fair trade is just the starting point. In a place marked by decades of conflict, the act of preserving these crafts is, in itself, a quiet form of resistance and hope. That’s why part of the profits from Sumud Stories™ go straight to help train the next generation of artisans.
