Hirbawi is the last factory in Palestine producing authentic kufiyas, located in the West Bank. By purchasing from us, you are supporting a proud tradition and a meaningful symbol of Palestinian heritage.

To buy an original Palestinian kufiya, visit our “Shop” page from the menu and choose the kufiya you'd like to purchase, then click “Add to cart.” When you're ready to complete your order, simply click on the shopping cart icon in the top right corner and follow the checkout steps to enter your shipping details and payment information.

What payment methods do you accept?

You can pay using PayPal, credit card, or debit card.

If you're located within the EU, you also have the option to make a prepayment via regular bank transfer. To use this method, please place your order through our German partner site: www.MADEinPALESTINE.de.

What happens after I place my order?

After placing your order, here’s what you can expect:

  1. Dispatch time: We require approximately two weeks to dispatch all orders after a restock.
  2. Tracking information: Once your order is shipped, we will email you the Portuguese tracking number. You can use this tracking number to track your package via your local postal service.
  3. Invoice: You will receive a separate email with your invoice from Moloni (our accounting software). This invoice may be helpful for customs clearance if required.
  4. Customs fees: Depending on your country’s regulations, customs fees may apply. These charges are not included in the product price and will be your responsibility upon receiving your order.
I signed up for the waiting list but haven't received any email from you. What should I do?

Waiting list emails are sent on a first-come, first-served basis. If you haven't received an email yet, it means you're still in line for the next restock. We announce restocks as soon as a new batch of kufiyas is produced in Palestine. Notifications are sent via email and shared on our social media channels.

We deeply appreciate your patience and interest.

Can I add other products to my kufiya order?

Due to high demand, we limit purchases to one kufiya per order.

However, you are welcome to add other products from the Palestinian artisans we support and promote, allowing you to save on shipping costs. Explore more Palestinian brands here.

Can I change my ordered kufiya?

Changes to your order are only possible if it hasn't been sent to the warehouse. If you haven't received a shipping confirmation, please provide your order number, the kufiya you initially ordered, and the one you wish to receive. We'll do our best to accommodate your request, but please be aware that many kufiyas may already be sold out.

Can I change my shipping address?

If your order hasn't been dispatched yet, we can attempt to update your shipping address. Please provide your order number, along with the new, complete address (including country and mobile number) in your request. We'll do our best to make the change.

Received the wrong kufiya?

We apologize for any mix-up. Our warehouse team works hard under pressure, and occasional errors can happen. Please email us (preferably by replying to your order confirmation) with a photo of the items you received. We’ll address the issue promptly.

When is the next restock?

We restock every 2–3 weeks.

About the kufiya

What is the difference between a keffiyeh and kufiya?

Keffiyeh and kufiya are two different spellings of the same word, both referring to a square meter of checkered fabric that has become a symbol of Palestinian identity and solidarity.

It may also be referred to as a hatta or shemagh. The term “keffiyeh” often applies to all traditional headscarves worn across the Middle East, regardless of variations in color or fabric.

What does wearing a keffiyeh mean?

Wearing the keffiyeh is widely seen as an expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people’s struggle for freedom.

Traditionally worn by farmers for sun protection, it has evolved into an emblem of sovereignty and solidarity with the Palestinian cause. During the Ottoman period, the keffiyeh was worn by rural workers while urban elites favored the red felt tarboosh hat. However, during the Arab Revolt of the 1930s against British colonial occupation of Palestine, Palestinians of all classes wore the black-and-white head covering in a show of national unity. The keffiyeh gained global recognition, especially after being worn by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

In the three decades that Israel banned the Palestinian flag, the keffiyeh further crystallized as a symbol of freedom and resistance. Wearing the keffiyeh is today seen as an unspoken expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

How to wear a keffiyeh?

The beauty of the keffiyeh is that you can wear it however and wherever you choose. For inspiration on different ways to style your keffiyeh, visit our “How to Wear” page.

What weather conditions are best for wearing a keffiyeh?

The kufiya is ideal for both cold and warm weather. In cold or windy climates, it offers warmth and protection, while in hot weather, its lightweight, breathable fabric shields against the sun and dust. It also has excellent moisture-wicking properties which help draw sweat away from the skin and dries quickly.

Is wearing a keffiyeh cultural appropriation? Who is allowed to wear a keffiyeh?

The keffiyeh can be worn by anyone in solidarity with the Palestinian cause. In fact, Palestinians often love seeing people around the world wear this meaningful fabric in support.

When you choose to wear an authentic keffiyeh made in Palestine, you are showing respect for its cultural significance and supporting its original community. However, wearing imitational versions made for fashion, and lacking any connection to its cultural roots, could be seen as cultural appropriation.

My keffiyeh has loose threads. What should I do?

Apparent ‘loose threads’ on the edges of the keffiyeh pattern are a common occurrence and are nothing to worry about.

These threads typically result from the hand-trimming of the pattern edges by our artisans during production. You can easily remove them by gently picking them off, or they may naturally fall away when the keffiyeh is washed.

What religion wears the keffiyeh?

The keffiyeh is a non-religious garment worn by people across faiths, Christians, Muslims, Druze and even secular individuals across the Middle East. It is a traditional piece of clothing, rather than a symbol of religious identity.

What country is the keffiyeh from?

The keffiyeh is most commonly associated with Palestinian culture, but its origins date as far back as 3100 BCE Mesopotamia, in the Kufa region of present-day Iraq. Over time, it spread across the Middle East, becoming popular in countries like Jordan, Syria and across the Gulf, albeit with different patterns and materials—for example, the red-and-white Jordanian shemagh, and the plain white ghutra commonly worn in Gulf countries like the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain.

However, the traditional black-and-white fishnet pattern keffiyeh has become a symbol of Palestinian identity and is widely recognized as a product of Palestinian culture and history.

What material is the keffiyeh made from?

The Hirbawi kufiya is crafted from 85% organic cotton, offering a natural and breathable fabric, and 15% high-quality synthetic thread, which helps maintain its durability and shape.

How do I wash my keffiyeh?

We recommend hand washing your kufiya to preserve its delicate fabric. If you choose to machine wash, use a delicate setting with mild detergent. For best results, air dry your kufiya after washing.
