Zaytouna, Arabic for olive, brings together two Palestinian crafts in one pendant: a NuGold copper frame set with mother-of-pearl, in luminous white or naturally iridescent green. Bethlehem artisans have worked mother-of-pearl for centuries, and pilgrimage and international trade turned it into one of the city's defining crafts. Handmade in Bethlehem, Palestine, by Sumud Stories artisans.

The story

The Story of Mother-of-Pearl in Bethlehem

Bethlehem has no sea, yet mother-of-pearl became one of its defining crafts. Shells reached the city along trade routes, first by caravan from the Red Sea through markets such as Alexandria, Acre and Damascus, and later from as far as New Zealand, Australia, Mexico and Brazil.

From the sixteenth century, the Franciscans trained and commissioned local artisans to make crosses, rosaries and detailed models of the holy places in olive wood and mother-of-pearl. Pilgrims carried these pieces home, building an international market around a Palestinian craft.

A model of the Church of the Nativity, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, entered the British Museum in 1753. By the nineteenth century, Bethlehem merchants were trading as far afield as Manila, Kyiv, Singapore and Port-au-Prince.

A 1924 report described mother-of-pearl as supporting the majority of the Bethlehem district, directly or indirectly, with around 500 people working the shell itself. Cutting, carving and polishing were learned in families and passed down through generations.

Sumud Stories carries this heritage forward by giving artisans new ways to use old skills. Our Zaytouna pendant joins metalwork and mother-of-pearl, setting New Zealand shell into a NuGold olive leaf, shaped by Palestinian hands in Bethlehem before it travels the world again.
