By Hirbawi®

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The story

Colors of the Arabian Desert

The Red & White Kufiya, with its striking pattern of checks and zigzags, carries within its threads centuries of heritage and identity. Traditionally worn by Bedouins in the Palestinian and Jordanian deserts, it was both practical and symbolic—shielding wearers from the sun and sand while marking tribal identity and resilience in a harsh landscape. Its bold red distinguished it from the classic black-and-white Palestinian kufiya, yet together they expressed a shared heritage rooted in land and tradition.

In Palestine, the Red & White Kufiya gained new meaning during the Second Intifada, when leftist Palestinian rebels adopted it as a symbol of resistance, equality, and freedom. Draped over shoulders or tied around faces, it became part of the struggle for dignity, its pattern echoing courage in the face of adversity.

Today, the Red & White Kufiya is recognized worldwide. While many call it the “Jordanian kufiya,” it is embraced across borders, a beloved sister to the black-and-white pattern. Worn by Palestinians, Jordanians, and global activists alike, it embodies solidarity, memory, and defiance. More than just cloth, it is a living emblem of shared struggle and cultural pride—reminding all who wear it of the intertwined histories of the desert, resistance, and enduring hope.
