Mandela African Hirbawi® Kufiya

€40,00 Sold out

Named after the world-renowned South African civil rights leader, the Mandela African Kufiya is woven in the Pan-African colors of Red, Yellow, Green, and Black. The Mandela Kufiya commemorates the common struggle of African nations for sovereignty and liberation from colonialism, with the human rights struggle against Israeli apartheid in Palestine. The proceeds from this Kufiya support the local African-Palestinian community and learning centre in Jerusalem.

By Hirbawi®

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The story

Long Walk to Freedom

On 11 February 1990, Nelson Mandela raised a clenched fist as he walked out of Victor Verster prison after 27 years of captivity. The struggle he led to end racial segregation and transform South Africa into a democracy is especially hailed by Palestinians, who have endured occupation for nearly a century. Thousands of Palestinians are imprisoned without legal justification, two million Gazans remain confined in what Human Rights Watch calls an “open-air prison,” and millions are separated from their ancestral homes by the Apartheid Wall. Yet, like Mandela, Palestinians remain hopeful and committed to the vision of liberation and freedom.

“Let My People Go” is the central message of the Mandela Kufiya. A biblical call that branded African struggles against tyranny, it remains relevant to Palestine today. The Palestinian story is deeply connected to those of African nations and their descendants in the Americas and Europe, all standing against colonialism, slavery, and apartheid in the pursuit of freedom.

This Kufiya symbolizes a shared struggle—a fabric that unites colonized and disenfranchised peoples, Pan-African and Palestinian alike, telling our story and demanding justice. Proceeds support the African-Palestinian community in Jerusalem, especially the youth of African descent who face ongoing discrimination under Israeli occupation. In Mandela’s words, “We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.” The Mandela African Kufiya strives to realize this vision.
