By Hirbawi®

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The story

Not to Forget

Perched on a scenic hilltop, Jenin overlooks vast plains rich with olive, palm, fig, and citrus orchards — its fertile lands dotted with the remains of ancient irrigation aqueducts. This city, settled since the Neolithic period, lies along the historic trade route from Nablus to Haifa, a testament to centuries of life, culture, and connection.

Yet beneath this beautiful landscape lies a story marked by struggle and resilience. The Jenin refugee camp, established in 1953 to shelter Palestinians displaced during the 1948 War, became a focal point of conflict during the Second Intifada in 2001. The Israeli military’s assault turned the camp into a battlefield, leaving it decimated. Witnesses recount harrowing scenes of unarmed civilians being shot and denied medical treatment, with many lives tragically lost — a reality powerfully captured in Mohammad Bakri’s documentary Jenin Jenin.

Despite such devastation, Jenin stands as a beacon of Palestinian bravery and self-determination. From the ruins, the community has risen with remarkable strength and hope. The Freedom Theatre, located in the heart of the refugee camp, is a shining example of this resilience — using art and culture as tools for healing, resistance, and the assertion of identity.
