The ancient harbor of Akka (عكا, “Acre”) has borne more than just the crashing of waves. Sought after by empires spanning three continents, the radiant pattern of the kufiya speaks to the vivid beauty of a town that was the cultural gateway between Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean, and yet still keeps its indigenous Palestinian heritage to this day. The Akka Kufiya is an effort to capture the vibrant spirit of this lively Mediterranean city.

By Hirbawi®

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The story

Pearl of the Levant

Akka, founded by the Canaanites around 3000 BCE, is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Its name likely comes from “Akkaw,” meaning “hot sand,” reflecting its sun-drenched Mediterranean coast. For millennia, Akka has been a vital fortified naval base and gateway between the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

Surrounded by sea walls built in the 7th century by the Umayyads, Akka was prized by many empires—the Crusaders, Abbasids, Mamluks, Ottomans, and the British—all leaving their mark on this ancient city. Despite repeated invasions, the Palestinian people of Akka remained resilient, cultivating a rich multicultural heritage. The city is home to diverse religious communities, including Muslims, Druze, Christians, Jews, and the Baháʼí faith, for which Akka is a sacred pilgrimage site.

The 1948 Nakba caused most Palestinians to be expelled from Akka, except those who found refuge behind the old city’s walls. These remaining residents have become the custodians of Akka’s authentic Palestinian soul. Today, Akka stands as a rare testament to Palestinian heritage within the occupied territories, where its historic buildings, religious sites, and cultural landmarks remain largely intact.

Akka is therefore not just a city; it is a living chronicle of Palestinian identity, a beacon of resilience, and a reminder that history’s deepest roots can never be erased.
