Our Yafa Hirbawi® Kufiya is a stunning tribute to the majestic city of Yafa (Jaffa), known for its timeless beauty and rich history. The vibrant blue zigzag pattern on the deep black background captures the essence of the city’s serene seaside and the expansive views of the Mediterranean coastline. This authentic Palestinian keffiyeh resonates with the spirit of Yafa (يافا), meaning beauty in Canaanite, the largest city in historic Palestine before the 1948 Nakba. Yafa holds a special place in the hearts of all Palestinians.

By Hirbawi®

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The story

The Great Port City

Once the epicentre of the Palestinian economy, the people of Yafa built their city on one major trade, citrus groves, and in particular, the world-renowned Yafa Orange. By the 1930s, Yafa was exporting tens of millions of citrus crates to the rest of the world, earning the city an important place in the global economy. With its success, the city flourished with new businesses, ranging from banks and shipping firms to numerous factories that produced glass, metal, textiles, sweets, and more.

Sadly, fortunes would run dry, as at the declaration of the establishment of the State of Israel, Zionist military forces displaced 95 percent of Yafa's indigenous Arab Palestinian population. The Palestinians of Yafa had lost everything overnight: their city, their friends, their families, their property, and their entire physical and social environment. Today, the estimated number of Palestinian refugees from Yafa hovers around 700,000, an estimated one-tenth of the Palestinian refugee population.

The story of Yafa's ongoing Nakba is the story of the transformation of this thriving modern urban center into a marginalized people suffering from poverty, discrimination, gentrification, crime, and demolition since the initial wave of mass expulsion in 1948 to the present day.
