The story

The Sunbird’s Song, Bethlehem’s Surviving Craft

In the quiet workshops of Beit Sahour, where olive wood’s rich grain whispers of centuries past, skilled craftsmen — many from the Palestinian Christian community — carve delicate renditions of the Palestine Sunbird. This small, iridescent creature, officially designated as the national bird of Palestine in 2015, becomes a talisman of hope and quiet defiance. Each necklace, fashioned under Sumud Stories’ mission of resilience, bears the sunbird’s graceful form, suspended on a simple leather cord, a symbol of both flight and rootedness.

Tourists once filled Bethlehem’s streets, marveling at olive-wood greatness born from an ancient tradition passed down through generations of Christian artisans in Bethlehem, Beit Sahour, and Beit Jala. Now, war and instability have silenced the holiday markets, drying up the lifeblood that sustained these families—tourism once accounted for around 70% of local income. In the absence of visitors, they turn to exports abroad, hoping each handcrafted piece carries their story beyond borders.

Sumud Stories illuminates their steadfastness—“sumud”—by offering these sunbird necklaces to the world, each one a graceful testament to beauty, endurance, and the transformative power of connection across distance.
