By Hirbawi®

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle, and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base” and the “pattern” or “flower” (وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colors and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs is available based on historic landmarks and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The story

The House of Dawn

The name of the township of “Beit Sahour” (بيت ساحور) means the “House of Dawn” and relates to the ancient shepherds of the town who would stay up until dawn, sahar in Arabic, to watch over their flock. Shepherds are a common theme in Beit Sahour. A stone's throw from the hilly town of Bethlehem, Christian tradition holds the valley to be the site of the Shepherds' Field, the place in biblical scripture where the angels shone in the sky and announced to a group of wandering shepherds that the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, was born.

The biblical role of the shepherds remains an important part of the story of Beit Sahour even today. Shepherds were always among the lower rungs of the social ladder, and yet in the story of the bible, it was neither a king nor a priest, but the humble shepherd who would be the first to receive the message of God’s return to Earth. In a turbulent region conquered perpetually by English kings, Ottoman Sultans, and now under illegal occupation, the message to the shepherds of the Beit Sahour valley is a gripping story of deliverance and liberation, and it has shaped the thinking of the Sahouri people for centuries.

Beit Sahour today is one of the last remaining Christian-majority towns in Palestine. Nestled within a predominantly Islamic community, the pluralistic society of the greater Bethlehem area has, over the centuries, encouraged the people of Beit Sahour to learn tolerance towards their Muslim neighbors while offering something unique. As the last vestige of Christian Palestinian heritage, it is ingrained in the Sahouri people to do more, to protect their heritage and community, and to become stronger.
