The Barbara (بربرة) Kufiya is named after a Palestinian farming village northeast of Gaza City, whose people were displaced to the Gaza Strip in 1948. Once known for its grapes and the market chant “Barbarawi ya ʿanab”, this Palestinian Keffiyeh is inspired by the colours of Barbara’s vineyards, orchards, and the land its people still remember.

By Hirbawi®

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The story

The Song of Barbara

In the markets of coastal Palestine, sellers once called out, “Barbarawi ya ʿanab” (“Barbara grapes, oh grapes!”), celebrating the famous sweetness of grapes grown in the village of Barbara.

Located between Gaza and al-Majdal, Barbara was surrounded by vineyards, orchards, olive groves, and gardens. Its grapes were renowned across the Palestinian coast and became a symbol of the village itself.

During the Nakba in 1948, Barbara was depopulated and most of its residents were displaced to the Gaza Strip, many settling in Rafah. Though little remains of the village today, its memory endures through generations of descendants.

Over time, the market cry evolved into a folk song still sung today, preserving the name of Barbara and the longing for a village never forgotten.

The colours of the Hirbawi® Barbara Keffiyeh draw inspiration from this story: soft lilac and mint evoke the vineyards and orchards, red reflects the grapes and warmth of village life, and black honours the memory carried forward in song and remembrance.
