The green threads of the Sheikh Jarrah (الشيخ جراح) kufiya represent the deep roots of the Palestinian families who have lived in this Jerusalem neighborhood for generations, building homes, raising families, and creating a community that has stood the test of time. Against all odds, the families of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood gained international attention when they stood up against sinister efforts by Israeli authorities to evict them from their homes. This kufiya is imbued with hope and solidarity for the residents of Sheikh Jarrah, serving as a conversation starter to prevent their story from falling into oblivion.

By Hirbawi®

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The story

Against All Odds

Gathered in their living room, the El-Kurd family was hastily discussing their options. They had just received an eviction notice from the Israeli authorities, stating that they had to vacate their home within a week. The family had lived in the house for generations, and the thought of losing it was devastating. Yet the El-Kurd family knew that their situation was not unique. Many Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah were facing the same threat of eviction by illegal settlers who claimed ownership of the properties. Determined to fight for their home, they began to document their story to bring attention to their plight.

Siblings Mohammed el-Kurd and Muna el-Kurd gained international attention as their valiant efforts to keep their home became a symbol of the wider Palestinian human rights effort. Mohammed el-Kurd, a Palestinian human rights activist and writer, continues to document his family's struggle and has been a strong voice in the campaign to stop the eviction of Palestinian families from neighbourhoods across Jerusalem. Muna el-Kurd, a young Palestinian woman, also made headlines when she organised her community to peacefully protest and defend their homes.

The residents of Sheikh Jarrah are in a struggle that has captured the world's attention and inspired millions of others to join the Palestinian effort for justice and peace. The story of Sheikh Jarrah is a reminder of the ongoing plight and inequality of Palestinian life, and the brave efforts made by individuals to ensure that the Palestinian people's rights are protected and respected.
