The ancient harbor of Akka (عكا, “Acre”) has borne more than just the crashing of waves. Sought after by empires spanning three continents, the radiant pattern of the kufiya speaks to the vivid beauty of a town that was the cultural gateway between Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean, and yet still keeps its indigenous Palestinian heritage to this day. The Akka Kufiya is an effort to capture the vibrant spirit of this lively Mediterranean city.

By Hirbawi®

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The story

Pearl of the Levant

Akka was founded by the Canaanites in 3000 BC, deriving its name from the word akkaw, meaning "hot sand." Possibly the third oldest city in the world, the people of Akka are on an ongoing mission to preserve its Palestinian identity in the face of an apartheid occupation that seeks to undermine it.

The coastal plain and city of Akka have historically been a fortified naval base and gateway between the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. Surrounded by sea walls built in the 7th Century by the Umayyad empire, Akka was exploited by subsequent empires as their most treasured fortified outpost in the Levant region, including the conquest of European Crusaders in the 12th century, followed by the Abbuyid Calophate, the Mamluks, the Ottomons, and eventually the British Emprie. The recurring experience of invasion by an outside occupier made the indigenous Palestinians of Akka incredibly resilient, and also nurtured a multicultural and diverse heritage, signified especially by Akka's diversity of religious communities, including Muslims, Druze, Christians, Jews, and notably the Baháʼí faith, of which Akka is a pilgrimage site.

Despite the city being considered part of the Arab-majority state proposed in the 1947 Partition Plan, the vast majority of Akka's indigenous Palestinian residents were expelled from Akka during the 1948 Nakba. The exception was those Palestinians who managed to hide behind the walls of the old city of Akka. To this day, with the exception of Nazareth, Akka is the only historic Palestinian city in the occupied territories where Palestinian buildings, cultural, religious, and historic sites are largely intact, thanks to the tireless efforts of these Palestinian residents.
