Hebron Hirbawi® Kufiya

Out of stock

Our factory is located in Hebron, known as “Al-Khalil” (الخليل). This Kufiya is a homage to our ancient city and the Al-Haram Al-Ibrahimi (Sanctuary of Abraham) mosque, which is considered to be one of the oldest still-operating holy sites in the world. The design of this Kufiya is inspired by the interior of mosque. With tiled stone walls, and a decorated green ceiling, the mosque also hosts two symbolic tombs for Issac (اسحق) and his wife Rebecca (رفقة), ornated in green and gold.

The Hirbawi family runs the last remaining kufiya factory in Palestine, producing the recognizable iconic designs known all around the world today.

Yassar Hirbawi, who founded the factory in 1962, describes a daily struggle to keep the factory afloat, now facing strong competition from cheaper kufiya manufacturers overseas and an unstable political environment at home.

Designed by the Hirbawi family at the last standing factory in Palestine, each Kufiya is handmade using a specific cross-stitching honed over decades. Only a handful of people still hold the generational knowledge of this time-honoured technique, which can be easily felt by the quality of the Kufiya’s materials and stitching.

An Ancient City Divided (الخليل)

Hebron is a hauntingly beautiful, ancient city, twisted and torn by decades of unrest and conflict. The city is often described as a “microcosm” of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. At the heart of Hebron is an illegal Zionist settlement area surrounded by Israeli military and checkpoints, barring Palestinians from entering areas of their own city. Israeli military even go as far as placing local residents under curfews, not allowing them to leave their homes, as part of the security program protecting the illegal settler population.

Much of the centre became a ghost town as Palestinians have shut up shop and moved out to escape Israeli checkpoints and conflict. And yet Hebron remains the largest hub of West Bank trade, generating roughly a third of the area’s gross domestic product, and a formidable manufacturing industry of limestone, pottery, glass, dairy, and ofcourse, Kufiyas. The bazaars of this old city have moulded the Hebronites into a widely-acclaimed, business savvy people.
