The story

The Living Heritage of Palestinian Ceramics

Ceramics hold a special place in Palestinian craftsmanship, culture, and daily life. The modern form of this art took shape in the early 20th century, when Armenian artisans arrived in Jerusalem and introduced new colours, motifs, and firing techniques while restoring the tiles of the Dome of the Rock. Their workshops soon became part of Palestine’s artistic landscape, inspiring local craftsmen and helping form a distinctive Palestinian ceramic tradition.

From the 1970s onward, Hebron grew into the centre of this craft. Palestinian artisans developed their own visual language, marked by rich colours, geometric patterns, village scenes, and images from Jerusalem, all painted meticulously by hand. Many families in Hebron still run small workshops where each piece is shaped, glazed, and decorated with care. Their work keeps an old craft alive while supporting the local economy in a city where artisanal production remains an important livelihood.

Today, Palestinian ceramics represent far more than decoration. They express cultural identity, continuity, and pride in a heritage passed down through generations. Each piece reflects resilience, the preservation of tradition, and the strength of communities sustaining themselves through their craft.

This ceramic work, like our pieces from Palestine, is part of that living heritage—a testament to Palestinian artistry and Sumud.
