The story

The Copper Trade of Palestine

Copper craftsmanship has been an integral part of life in Palestine for centuries, cherished for both its practicality and aesthetic beauty. Historically, copper was used in Palestinian homes for tools, cookware, jewelry, and decorative items. Cities like Hebron and Bethlehem became renowned for their skilled metalworkers, who passed down their craft through generations. Today, this heritage continues in workshops like the one where the Copper Kufiya Bracelet is made.

This engraved copper bangle is the result of a collaboration between Sumud Stories and a historic jewelry workshop in Bethlehem. Operational for over fifty years, the workshop is owned by an Armenian Palestinian family and employs 15 skilled artisans from across Palestine, including Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza. These artisans, representing Muslim and Christian, Arab and Armenian communities, work together to create pieces that honor Palestine’s cultural traditions while providing sustainable livelihoods.

The Copper Kufiya Bracelet draws its design from the Hirbawi Kufiya pattern, combining two deeply rooted cultural heritages of Palestine. This unique, made-in-Palestine copper bangle is more than a piece of jewelry – it is a tangible connection to history and identity.

Copper is a remarkable material, believed in Palestine to offer health benefits such as improving circulation, relieving joint pain, and promoting better sleep. Unlike static materials, copper evolves over time, developing a patina that reflects its journey and interaction with the wearer and the environment. This natural transformation personalizes each bracelet, making it truly one of a kind as it becomes a reflection of its wearer’s unique story.
