A limited edition product from Sumud Stories. The Birds of Palestine calendar is a beautiful way to stay connected to Palestine’s landscapes throughout the year. Featuring 12 months of full-colour bird photography, it highlights Palestine’s remarkable avian diversity and its importance as a major migratory crossroads. Each month includes a clear, educational description of the featured species, printed on high-quality, eco-friendly paper with spacious date grids for notes.

All photographs were taken in Palestine by Palestinian wildlife enthusiasts from the West Bank and Gaza, each coming from a different profession but united by a deep love for nature. The calendar is designed and printed in Palestine, supporting local work and craftsmanship. Part of the profit goes to the Land of Beauty Initiative, helping fund its educational activities and nature programmes with school children.

The story

Land of Beauty, A Sumud Stories Initiative

The Land of Beauty Initiative is a grassroots movement uniting botanists, ornithologists, photographers, conservationists and nature lovers to revive appreciation for Palestine’s natural beauty. Despite its small size, Palestine hosts around three percent of the world’s species, giving it exceptional ecological significance. The initiative documents this rich biodiversity and promotes environmental awareness, especially among young people.

Working with schools, it introduces children to birdwatching, plant observation and the identification of both local and migratory species. It also mentors young Palestinian photographers, encouraging them to explore natural landscapes and capture wildlife through their lenses.

To reach a wider audience, the initiative produces annual wall calendars showcasing different aspects of Palestine’s natural heritage. However, documenting nature is often difficult. Restricted access to land, expanding construction, blocked pathways and harassment of hikers near settlements create significant obstacles for those trying to study or photograph the landscape.

Despite these challenges, the initiative remains dedicated to celebrating and protecting Palestine’s wildlife. Through education, community engagement and creative publications, it continues to inspire people to value and safeguard their environmental heritage, even in the face of difficult circumstances.
