PALESTINIAN SOLIDARITY

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The Story

Land of the Glorious (غزة)

In 1948, 200,000 Palestinians sought refuge in Gaza, making up roughly a quarter of those who fled or were expelled from their homes. Brutally sieged by Israel and blockaded on all sides, Gazan Palestinians hold out in a marginal area at the heart of Palestinian history.

Internationally recognised as an “indirectly occupied” territory, Gaza’s air and maritime space, land crossings, imports, exports, water, electricity, telecommunications, and other utilities are all controled by Israel. It reserves the right to enter Gaza at will with its military and maintains a no-go buffer zone within the Gaza territory. Over 3000 Palestinian children have died since the year 2000, and most are Gazan boys and girls whom have faced as much as 4 sieges by Israel in their lifetime. As of 2021, over 50% of Gazans are unemployed. and half of the population lives in poverty.

In such darkness, the inner fire of Gazan people, and their will and desire for freedom, has captured the hearts of the international community time and time again. Perhaps more than any Palestinian community, the endurance of Gaza is a beacon of sustained hope, for all who stare at Apartheid straight in the face.
