The Hirbawi family runs the last remaining kufiya factory in Palestine, producing the recognizable iconic designs known all around the world today.

Yassar Hirbawi, who founded the factory in 1962, describes a daily struggle to keep the factory afloat, now facing strong competition from cheaper kufiya manufacturers overseas and an unstable political environment at home.

Designed by the Hirbawi family at the last standing factory in Palestine, each Kufiya is handmade using a specific cross-stitching honed over decades. Only a handful of people still hold the generational knowledge of this time-honoured technique, which can be easily felt by the quality of the Kufiya’s materials and stitching.

The Nabulsi Valley (نابلس)

A Palestinian commercial and cultural center, Nablus resides in a narrow valley as a crossroads between Damascus in the north, and Jerusalem in the south. Caravans carrying rice, spices, copper, cotton, oils, and famed Nabulsi soaps would pass through its trade routes. Nablus also sustained an elite class, fostering the development of a culture of “high cuisine”, well known throughout the Levant for its best known Nabulsi sweet; Kanafeh.

Today, Nablus’s historical roads have been cut by international borders, surrounded by illegal Israeli settlements the separation wall and a series of Israeli checkpoints. In audacious Nabulsi style, we nonetheless celebratethe rich, vibrant, living indigenous traditions of Nablus with this kufiya.
